SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HIKES & CAMPSITES

Blake Hester has curated our Field Guide for May 2024 featuring Southern California Hikes & Campsites.

The Southern California coast offers some of the most scenic hikes & campsites available. This list features some of Blake’s favorite spots within a 3-hour drive of WillBo HQ.

CRYSTAL COVE STATE PARK / EL MORO

Growing up in Laguna, I was lucky enough to drive the stretch of PCH that threads between Crystal Cove State Park and El Morro Beach daily. Nestled in the heart of OC, these grounds provide a special reprieve from the hustle and bustle of Southern California. Go for the day, or choose from car or tent camping options. Primitive (no bathrooms) tent sites are a short hike uphill and have incredible views.

Note: The El Moro Canyon Loop Trail and the Moro Ridge Trail provide a combination of coastal panoramas and inland scenery.

SAN ELIJO

A true classic in Southern Cal with cliffside campgrounds, views of North County surf breaks, surf, walking trails, and delicious food within striking distance (Cardiff and Encinitas.) Book early; it’s a popular spot.

SAN ONOFRE STATE BEACH

San O’ has a storied history for many reasons. With evidence of Native American habitation dating back thousands of years, becoming a working cattle ranch under the O’neil family, and playing a significant role during World War II as a military training facility… just to name a few. On top of all of that, it’s home to some of the most iconic surf and surf culture found in California. The pristine coastline and scenic views make this beachfront campground a relaxing environment to enjoy with friends.

Enjoy with friends, some single fins, dogs, bbq supplies, cold beers and a couple guitars – just like they did in the old days.

ANZA-BORREGO DESERT STATE PARK

If you're up for a change of scenery, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is about a 3-hour drive from Laguna. This expansive desert park offers camping opportunities amidst stunning desert landscapes, with options for both developed and primitive camping.

Bonus: PARSON'S LANDING

Secluded beach camping on Catalina Island's north end. 8 tent sites that are accessible via a 6-mile, flat hike from Two Harbors. For the extra adventurous - The Trans Catalina Trail (TCT) A 37.2 mile trail that traverses the length of Catalina. A challenging but rewarding trail that spans diverse terrain and provides unique encounters with native wildlife – such as bison and foxes.
