SUN VALLEY FIELD GUIDE

Jack Pillsbury has curated our Field Guide for January 2024 featuring a special, old school mountain town with minimal crowds and rich history — Sun Valley, ID.

EAT

If you're looking for a restaurant that's been around for 100+ years, look no further than The Pioneer Saloon — specifically the loaded baked potato. Grumpy's is another well-known establishment in town with a great schooner + cheeseburger combination. For a non-potato option, check out Rickshaw's Asian fusion fare. For more local vibes, head to Lefty's.

DRINK

When you're ready for a crisp beverage, The Casino is a forever favorite with pool tables, Big Buck Hunter, and PBRs. The Cellar is another cozy winter spot. In the summer, it's hard to miss live music throughout town so follow the tunes and you're bound to find a good time.

EXPLORE

Sun Valley is full of options year-round. If you want a break from downhill skiing, highly recommend cross-country skiing at Galena Lodge, hot springs down Warm Springs Road, or the Sun Valley Suns semi-pro Hockey games in Hailey. Come Summer, choose your own adventure with mountain biking, golf, hiking, fishing, and beyond.

SKI

Bald Mountain is the signature resort, while Dollar Mountain is a great spot to learn how to ski or snowboard. With easy access to the mountains right in town, you can find technical tree runs, wide-open bowls, and untouched snow even a week after a storm. All 3 lodges are great for a mid-day beer with live music and views. Apples is your classic aprés bar with tasty chili to warm you up after a long day.
